About Lawnswood Cemetery:

The Cemetery is owned by Leeds City Council (LCC) who acquired it from Leeds Burial Board in 1972. It was opened in 1875 and now comprises 53 acres encompassing the original 10 acre Victorian chapel and burial ground, the 1905 Crematorium, the 1933 Columbarium, the War Memorial and various extensions- each one reflecting the fashion of its day. The buildings and four of the memorials are Grade 2 listed. (See history). The Cemetery is now full apart from existing Family plots but the Crematorium is still in use.

Why the Friends?

The Group was established in October 2011 to enhance, promote and protect the Cemetery for future generations. This is being done with the support of LCC. On the first Saturday of the month volunteers meet at 10.00 am in the carpark to undertake practical work such as edging paths, pruning shrubs, cleaning and weatherproofing benches, tidying graves, litter-picking etc, led by a qualified Council Parks and Countryside Ranger. Tools and refreshments are provided.   New volunteers would be very welcome as would new Committee members with new ideas.

It costs just £5 per year to join the Friends and simply being a member helps with the costs of day to day expenses such as stationery, venue hire for meetings and other events, public liability insurance, etc. Donations are always very welcome.

Benefits of being a member:

  • you are helping to protect the Cemetery
  • you will receive two newsletters per year reporting on the activities of the Friends
  • invitations to: the Summer Tea Party with a guest speaker; events such as specialist walks in the Cemetery; the Annual General Meeting, again with a relevant guest speaker.
